有着“法国希区柯克”之称的电影大师亨利-乔治·克鲁佐执导的作品，讲述小镇居民收到匿名诽谤信后互相猜疑，甚至引发暴力事件的故事。影片根据真实事件创作，克鲁佐暗渡陈仓意在隐射当时法国被纳粹占领后，普通老百姓人人自危的心态。由于影片为德国公司出品，因此上映后受到法国抵抗运动的抵制，二战胜利后克鲁佐一度受此牵连，被判终身禁拍电影，后经过抗争，于1947年恢复导演身份。本片也于1969年在法国正式解禁，并逐渐被视为法国电影经典，甚至有评论家认为这是在诞生于“黑色电影”命名之前的第一部法式黑色电影，昆汀·塔伦蒂诺也在《无耻混蛋》中向它致敬。
